"The Shift" by Janet Royko, Music by Ty Klassen

We are working on a play that will be a process of reality creation. Collaboratively we can produce a play reflective of what we passionately want to bring in for the human race.

There was theatre with powerful influence in the 60's-70's. What we need to connect people with a vision in our days, is a presentation with poignant impact. Not the same concepts as back then, rather what we are holding in our common thought. We are no longer isolated individuals, we are CONNECTED.

Scenes 3 and 4

SCENE 3  (ROWAN'S HOUSE)

HEATHER: (LIGHTS UP down left, doors to far L and up L) (Knocks and enters far R door with bags)  Hello!  Mother!
ROWAN:  (Rowan putting food table, turns)  Heather!  You are here.   Welcome home! (hugs) Come in, come in!  I fixed up your old room for you, so just put your things in there.  (Rowan opens up R door)  I hope you like it.  (H exits to put her things off stage and returns)  Let me take a look at you.  Besides a little tired, you look beautiful.  Are you hungry? (goes to table )
H:  Thanks, I am, and it smells really good.  (she sits at the table and dishes up plate)  My old room looks so good.  Would you mind terribly if I stay for a bit until I figure out what I want to do now?
R:  Wow!  Fantastic!  We could get to know each other again.  I want to hear your story.  You will have lots of time to yourself, because I am still on call, and gone for long periods at a time.  You remember. (H nods)  When I'm here though, I would love to spend some time with you.  I didn't know when you were coming, and tonight I have music practice in the park, and I'm taking a picnic dinner.  Of course, you are welcome to join us.
H:  Thanks mom.  That sounds great.  I'd love to play some music again.
R:  Kate will be there.
H:  Oh!  I'd love to see Kate.  We have kept in touch, but it's been a long time since I've seen her.
R:  What made you come home?  We haven't been the best of communicators, but I always think about you, and I'm curious about your life in the big city. You were always such a gentle spirit, I was wondering how you were managing in that jungle. (stands behind giving shoulder massage)
H:  That feels really good.  (Pause) For a while now it has been getting harder for me to get into my work.  I used to think it was the greatest place to be, and I was passionate about my life, but lately everything feels so meaningless.  Everyone is racing around being… busy.  Even in my relationships I was disconnected, more like bumper cars.  I have this strong urge to find out what I want to be a part of, something worthwhile.  I just know that I needed to come home.
R:  You might as well expect the very best.  Never settle for less!  (plants kiss on her cheek)  You'll figure it out.  You are a clever girl.
H:  Thanks, Mom, I love you.
R:  I love you too, Heather.  Take a few minutes to get adjusted and we'll head for the park.(BLACKOUT)

SCENE 4  (PARK)

( LIGHTS UP center, Rowan and Heather carrying basket and folding table enter SR, others around the bench setting up tuning and jamming, and Patricia enters SL bringing stools)
ALL:  (greeting and hugs, getting set up, Heather sets up a small table and puts food out)
ROWAN:  You can see, Heather is back for a while.
OTHERS:  That's great, glad you're back, so good to see you etc.(some start eating)
PATRICIA:  You must be John.  Will told me he invited you to join us.  Welcome.  (All introduce themselves)  Z says he's written a new piece for us.
Z:  I have been trying to come up with something that will allow us to create a strong vision that will raise our vibration.
Patricia:  You know I'm stuck on the idea of creating Heaven.
Harold:  The more clearly we visualize heaven, the closer it gets.
David:  We can choose how we want things to be, make our own energy vibrate at that level, and we will cause more of that same vibration to manifest around us.
Harold:  Law of Attraction.
R:  It may all come down to physics, but it is easier for me to think about simply being in close connection with the Source of the energy of life...Holding the space for that energy to come in.
C:  The energy of love and kindness definitely dispels any kind of lower energy.
PATRICIA:  (smiles looking at each)  With the love of good friends in our circle, and blessed food in abundance, we have created heaven.
J:  You're right, I think Heaven is here and now.
Heather:   Peace and joyful feelings empower us.
Z:  May I play you the song I've been working on.  If you like it, do you think we have time to get it ready for Sunday's Music in the Park?
OTHERS:  Let's hear it, we'll see how easy it is to pick up, etc. (Patricia's song)  (LIGHTS fade center, dance segment, LIGHTS back up SR, HEATHER dance segment, she sits, all exit SL except JOHN, John starts to leave but comes back into her lights, both make eye contact, sunset)
HEATHER:  I'm sorry, but do I know you?
JOHN:  You seem familiar to me too.
H:  Are you from around here?
J:  No, I'm from Ottawa.  As of last week, though, my home is that tent over there.
H:  I just came from Ottawa too.  I had a bad experience with an oil company CEO, which forced me to take a good look at what I really want in my life.
J:  That's where I saw you.  That was my Dad, you went to see.  I thought you were one of his "girls".  You did look sort of angry when you left.
H:  I was so mad I didn't really notice you, but... (looking at him) yes, I remember you now.  I am fed up with clients who expect an exchange of favours, and bartering devalued my work.
J:  I turned my back on that life too.  (Pause) I really like this spot.
H:  I grew up here.  This was my favorite spot as a child.  It seems like another lifetime.
J:  Do you mind if I sit here?
H:  This is kind of a sanctuary to me, can you respect that?
J:  Yes.    (Sits, giving her plenty of space.  Pause)  Actually… something clicked for me in a deep way when wet met?
H:  It does feel like a deja vu.  (Pause as both look at the sunset) It feels so good to be back here.  I've been away for..let's see.. it must be six years.  I had to prove to myself, that I could be successful in the "real world"... but advertising turned out to be more of an illusion.
J:  I lived that so called "success story" as well.  My heart was not in the path my family had set for me.  I feel bad about my father.  All I can do is send him love.  The oil business is more than heartless, it is ruthless and cruel.
H:  Funny, the advertising company I worked for was Hart & Hanson.  When I joined the firm, I believed it actually had Heart, but I was wrong.
J:  My new life is so exciting...my senses are opening up to a new world.  I'm coming alive and loving it.  What I'm finding is much better than what I could have imagined.  Look!  Here I am sitting beside you...  it's...beautiful!  I love it!   (Pause while both watch the sunset, then John rises.)  I’ll leave you to enjoy your space.  See you here on Sunday.
H:  I think it will be really good.  See you then.  (John leaves, LIGHTS FADE SR)
( LIGHTS UP SL, as Will, David, and Kate enter)
KATE: That was a good rehearsal.  I still think the Performing Arts are the ultimate form of creative expression.
DAVID:  Theatre demonstrates that what we place our Awareness on, becomes the reality.
WILL: You know, people are using theatre techniques these days, for tools to help us get in touch with our feelings and fears.
DAVID: Controlling others becomes less important, when we focus together on a clear vision of what we all want.
KATE: I'd love to be part of a group that focuses on evolving, and changing with the changes together. I feel this need to do something to help humanity move forward.
WILL: Yea, I know what you mean. I am looking forward to seeing how relationships will evolve.
KATE:  (Pause walking, then stop)I have been thinking lately.  What if women refused to sleep with men who hold destructive thinking in their hearts?  Could humanity genetically evolve away from killing? Goddesses of the Earth unite!
WILL: Whoa! That's a big control issue!
KATE: Maybe not so much a control issue as making right choices for women's safety and for the welfare of future generations.
DAVID:  I guess it might be possible to turn mens' hearts with the right incentive, though.
WILL:  It all boils down to respect for ourselves and for each other.(Kate nods. The three exit thinking, LIGHTS out SL and up SR, as music starts for short segment of rhythm and dance with HEATHER, BLACKOUT, costume changes for all, quick for Heather)
